Bulgaria return to the Eurovision Song Contest final for only the second time in their history, what’s more, they might just run away with the whole thing and win with If Love Was A Crime!
If Poli Genova does win Eurovision for Bulgaria, it will be a shock to the bookies who still rate the song as a 66/1 outsider but the new Eurovision voting system is expected to deliver a few surprises and many believe this entry will be one of them.
Poli Genova has been somewhat of a Eurovision revelation this year. She has one of the most popular up-tempo numbers and Eurovision fans from across the continent were celebrating her qualification from the second semi final.
Poli’s stage outfit includes LED light patches on her shoulders and legs, a trick that failed to impress for the United Kingdom’s Electro Velvet last year or Austria in 2012, but it’s certain worked for the futuristic dance act this time.
Whilst the song is in English, they kept one line in Bulgarian. Whilst Poli sings ‘Day mi lyubovta’, many fans have provided alternative lyrics. Some thought she was singing ‘buy me a loser’, whilst those who have been caught singing in the shower seem to have opted for ‘find me a loofah’.
It’s Poli’s second time at the Eurovision Song Contest, taking Bulgaria to 12th place in the semi final in2011. With Na Inat.
The official video is about to pass three million views on the official Eurovision channel and the song is already hitting the club scene across the Mediterranean. It’s one you won’t be able to miss if you’re heading to Ibiza or Agia Napa this summer.
The song has already charted in Lithuania, Norway and Sweden and has even managed to get to number four in Guatemala!
Poli will be singing from 8th place in the Eurovision Song Contest final. It’s an early draw but certainly not impossible to sing from. She follows fellow dark horse Hovi Star from Israel and their songs are clearly different. Her up tempo club track works well next to his powerful ballad and it won’t harm either of them.
Bulgaria have only reached the Eurovision final once before, back in 2007 with Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov and their entry Water. That year, they were 6th in the semi final and went on to take 5th place in the final.
She’s been touring Europe and appearing at all the preview parties including London, Amsterdam, Riga and Tel Aviv. She’s also been jamming with other Eurovision entrants including France’s Amir Hadad.
Just like in 2007, Bulgaria’s momentum is building and Poli has a good chance of beating their fifth place record at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. Watch out for a massive reaction for Bulgaria in the arena on Saturday night.
